ACUPUNCTURE

PREMISE: There is a two way communication between the skin and all organs, glands and tissues of the body, by stimulating certain skin points the progress of the condition can not only by arrested, but even reversed bringing the body back to health with normal function.

HISTORY:  Acupuncture was discovered by battlefield injuries and their effects on certain parts of the body.  The first documented text was the Internal Classic written during the reign of the Yellow Emperor in China around 2800 B.C.  The first acupuncture needles were bone, bamboo, gold and silver.  We now use disposable stainless steel needles, and gold or silver needles.  Microcurrent, electrical current stimulation is widely used today, as well as an instrument called a Teishin, which is a nonpiercing needle used to apply external pressure to acupuncture points.  The acupuncture needles used in this office are seirin disposable stainless steel and are used only one time, eliminating the risk of infection.  Their width is .25MM (the width of a hair) and are painless in their insertion.  Their insertion is the Japanese method, which is very superficial (1-2MM).

MECHANISMS OF ACUPUNCTURE:  According to research performed by Dr. Bruce Pomeranz at the University of Toronto, the analgesic (pain control) effect of acupuncture is due to simulation of the release of brain peptides known as endorphins, enkephalins, and dynorphins.  These are the chemicals which produce the well known "runners high".  Hence, acupuncture may be of benefit for the treatment of stress and emotional types of disorders.  Further research performed by Dr. Joseph Wyban at the Department of Immunology of Erasmus Hospital of the Free University of Brussels demonstrated that endorphins and enkephalins are also immunomodulators and modifiers of the biological response.  Lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) have surface receptors for endorphins and enkephalins and can stimulate anti-body production which can improve the body's resistance to infection and disease.
